The Detroit Pistons coach gives a first impression of Tobias Harris

Throughout the preseason, the Detroit Pistons were very fortunate to have the majority of their roster available to get live reps. However, there was one newcomer who started a little late. After finally officially beginning his second term with the franchise, Tobias Harris received high praise from head coach JB Bickerstaff.

Harris missed the Pistons' first two preseason games due to illness. The experienced striker made his debut against the Phoenix Suns at the weekend. In his first taste of real action for the Pistons this year, Harris scored 22 points and five rebounds in 27 minutes of work. Harris' second outing was a forgettable outing as he scored just six points on 3-for-9 shooting.

Now that JB Bickerstaff has had the opportunity to see Harris live at work, he was asked for his thoughts on the vet's impact. The longtime coach continued to praise his basketball IQ. “He just knows how to play,” Bickerstaff said after practice Tuesday. “He knows what a game needs. He knows how he can influence the game.”

Looking ahead to this season, Harris will be someone Bickerstaff will rely on heavily throughout the regular season. As someone who has a lot of mileage in the NBA, he can be an on-site coach of sorts for the young team. More importantly, Harris will be a pillar in the locker room as he looks to act as a mentor to the up-and-coming players.

Harris' inconsistent preseason play shouldn't be a cause for concern considering he's still shaking off the rust from the offseason. During the regular season, he will make sure he is prepared to be a key piece for the Pistons on both ends of the court.
